What is happening right now
|
Here's the cut and dry explanation of what is happening so far: Some time ago, Autumn was the only person who helped Mathew cope the tragedy of his mother and younger brother's death. She helped him get his first real job at the music store and pulled him out of depression. Autumn and Mathew became good friends through work and guitar lessons.
It's been a year since this happened. The first pages show the very last guitar lesson Autumn will give to Mathew. Mathew out of pity has been missing school and work just to visit Autumn in the woods. Something has happaned to Autumn that Mathew does not understand. Forgetting his priorities and responsibilities he tries to help her just like she helped him before. But he fails to do so. He leaves her in the woods returning the acoustic guitar she gave him a year before. He leaves feeling ashamed, depressed, and regretful.
Driven by a mysterious outside influence, Mathew is driven back to find Autumn in the woods. He finds her bloody, scarred, and torn. He tries to help but Autumn acts out of character and refuses indignantly. He is forced to get outside help and Autumn ends up in the hospital. Autumn acts sincere and truthfully when Mathew visits. She vaguely asks Mathew for help. Mathew is confused but searches for Autumn's guitar in the woods. There he finds a girl with a cat mask who leads him to the bloody guitar.

Back Story
|
When Mathew was young he had lost his mother and brother to a car accident. Mathew was left with only his father, who struggled to pay rent and meet ends. To relieve some stress from his father Mathew has been working from a very young age. Years later, deeply troubled by his father's health, Mathew finds another part time job at a music store. Although Mathew is unable to find any time to study, he continues to sacrifice school to relieve some stress off of his father. With pressure to help his father and school work, Mathew perseveres. At the music store, he meets Autumn.
"The Riff" is the music store where Autumn and Mathew work. It is a small privately owned business run by Allen Walter. Although always laid back and mellow, Allen is an aggressive manager always finding ways to bring in new customers. Which is one of the reasons The Riff is a multi-faceted store selling electric guitars, acoustics, keyboards and other musical instruments while offering a place to eat and buy cd's. The small library, musical background, and laid back style of the store encouraged Autumn to spend hours everyday there. Allen saw Autumn's strong affinity for the store and offered her a part-time job. When not handling the customer's money, Autumn gives out free beginner guitar lessons to young children.
Autumn has been playing the acoustic guitar all her life. The Riff naturally drew Autumn in letting her use her outgoing and optimistic personality to greet customers and teach children. While Allen deeply cares for The Riff, he is far to lazy to help Autumn with inventory or any menial tasks. Autumn doesn't really mind this because it gives her more reason to stay at The Riff. Initially she just visited the store to check out the books and music. As time went on, Allen noticed Autumn's attraction to the place and offered her a reason to stay at The Riff. So, for about two years, Autumn has been working at the Riff, slowly trying to maintain her happiness there.
